Thailand awards Nepali eye surgery innovator
BANGKOK, - Dr Sanduk Ruit, an internationally renowned ophthalmologist and recipient of the Ramon Magsaysay award, has added another feather to his cap by becoming the first Nepali to win Thailand's Prince Mahidol Award.
Thai King Bhumibol Adulyadej, the longest reigning monarch in the world today, conferred the prestigious award on Dr Ruit at a function held at Bangkok's Ananda Samakhon Throne Hall Wednesday evening. The award comprises a medal, a certificate and a purse of US$50,000.
Dr Ruit, who introduced the suture-less operation technique in cataract surgery and played a vital role in manufacturing inexpensive but high-quality intraocular lenses, was honored for his contribution to public health.
