Taoiseach to tell Tribunal that cheque was a gift from his late mother
Dublin- The Taoiseach (Irish Primeminister), Bertie Ahern, is reportedly expected to tell the Mahon Tribunal - that a mystery 5,000 pound cheque lodged to two of his bank accounts in 1994 - came from his late mother, Julia Ahern. The tribunal revealed the existence of the 5,000 pound sum during Mr Ahern's evidence before Christmas.
Meanwhile... It's understood almost one third of TD's from all parties in the Dail may have the same tax cert problem as the Taoiseach. Fifty TD's have failed to provide documentary evidence their tax affairs are in order just weeks before a statutory deadline imposed by the Standards in Public Office Commission.
