Dundalk named cleanest town in Ireland

Dublin- Dundalk has been named as Ireland's cleanest town in the latest survey conducted by the Irish Business Against Litter organisation. Cavan and Fermoy have come in second and third in the league table, compiled following visits to 50 locations around the country. Sligo is classed as the dirtiest place in Ireland, followed by Nenagh, Tallaght and Mallow, which are also named as litter black-spots.
The study raises concerns about a sharp rise in fast-food litter, which IBAL says is increasing by 30% every year. The organisation is calling on the Government to introduce a tax on such packaging, as well as on chewing gum, which also contributes significantly to Ireland's litter problem.Speaking at the launch of the litter survey, Junior Minister for the Environment Tony Killeen admitted that the voluntary scheme brought in to address this situation was not having the desired effect. He said tougher measures may be needed, but a levy would be just one of a number of possibilities that need to be examined.
